October 2008 press release
The 08/09 Cornwall Volleyball League has got under way and the defending champions
Countrymen will do well to repeat last year's league and cup double and hold off
the challenge of an expanded and strong Division One. The big news for the new season
is the resurection of Truro Volleyball Club through the tireless efforts of Cornish
Volleyball stalwart Dave Robson. The new club will be coached by Dave Tyack who has
moved from Countrymen and training is every Tuesday evening at Penair School from
8-10pm.
The league also welcomes the return of RNAS Culdrose after a year out due
to service commitments but with the servicemen having the inevitable new look team
it is their neighbours at Helston College who will pose the biggest threat to Countrymen
again. After narrowingly losing out in a five set play off final last year, Helston
will be out for revenge and have started the season as they mean to carry on, beating
both RAF St Mawgan and Culdrose comfortably. Truro did their best to give themselves
a dream start in their first match but ended up losing narrowly to St Austell. Defending
Champions Countrymen, who play out of Ludgvan, nr Penzance, have yet to play this
season as matches against Culdrose and Truro have had to be postponed, so they will
face a tough opening fixture versus St Austell this Sunday (16th Nov).
Division Two
is wide open again and is, as always, a good opportunity to blood inexperienced players
or give those of advanced years a chance to relive the glory days(in their own heads
at least!). Helston B have made a good start winning their first two games and the
experience of Countrymen B won the game against St Austell B. However the season
has not got off to a auspicious start as a terrible injury to Jessica of St Mawgan
B saw paramedics attend Polkyth Leisure Centre during their away match at St Austell.
With the game at 2-1 to St Mawgan the match was abandoned with neither team having
the stomach to continue and will be continued at a later date. Best wishes for a
speedy recovery to Jess.
Two sessions of women's only Volleyball have been held already
this season at Cornwall College, Pool. With the net lowered, it's a whole new ball
game for most of the ladies and after just two sessions there is an obvious abudance
of potential and the green shoots of a cracking squad. With regular training there's
no reason why Kernow Ladies won't compete at regional level next year and then who
knows?
2008/9 season fixtures list are now on the web site
Paul Bartlet has finalised the fixtures and we have posted them on the fixtures page.
Change to the way match results are handled are on the way
It is planned that soon teams will enter the results of the matches on line, complete with match reports. The tables will then automatically be updated and the match reports displayed on the match reports web page
Countrymen club enters team in the South West Veterans tournament in Plymouth
Countrymen entered a team, made up of A and B team members, into the South West Veterans tournament at Plymouth which was held on Sunday 5th October.
Unfortunately due to other matches being held on the same day, there were only 4 teams that took part. City of Bristol, Yeovil, Countrymen and North Devon Ladies. Countrymen came third after only beating the ladies team, who played extremely well, but suffered from not training together for many years, some for 20. The main competition was between City of Bristol, who had three national div 2 players and Yeovil, who play in the South West Regional League, both of which were too strong for Countrymen to defeat, however, Countrymen did put up a good fight, having a much higher average age than the other three teams. City of Bristol won the tournament in a 2-0 defeat against Yeovil.
